The Shaman is the powerful spiritual influence on the Salish people. It is said that the Shaman is able to transform and cause both humans and animals to transform and as such his powers are fearful.

However, according to legend it is the Shaman who is to be a leader and example to the people and is to use his power for good and not evil.

This Shaman spirit mask depicts a Shaman who has not followed this rule and as a result has been permanently cast into that world that is neither real nor spirit and is now caught forever. He is neither able to influence the real world or walk in the spirit world and the mask is a reminder to others to ensure that Shaman powers are used correctly.
