explained by R. Elsie John: Thunderbird and Whale Thunderbird! The
name of this marvelous creature of myth stirs the imagination. To many North Americans,
but to the West Coast people this great bird, living high in the mountains, was
the most powerful of all spirits - the personification of "Chief". Only
the most powerful and prestigious of chiefs has Thunderbird as a crest. Whale Since
ancient times, seafarers have held in awe those great mammals of the ocean, the
whales, and made them the subject of fantasy and superstition. The West Coast
people actively hunted the grey whale. They were the only people along the entire
Northwest Coast to do so, and they sought success in the hunt through months of
rigorous ceremonial preparation. Moon "On
the moon that your grandfather left us." The moon is such a powerful force
and symbol that no person can claim it as a crest or otherwise, it is shared by
everyone. The moon is the symbol of ultimate power. There are two types of moon.
"The Moon" and "The Rich Moon."
